Janine's Chicken Soup

1 whole chicken

  1. 3 carrots 

  2. 2 stalks of celery

  3. 1 bay leaf

  4. 1 yellow onion

  5. 1 garlic clove

  6. 1/2 teaspoon tumeric

  7. 5 or 6 whole cloves or 1/2 tsp. ground cloves - the secret ingredient!

  8. Salt & pepper to taste, or a big spoonful of Better Than Bouillon 

  9. Cut up chicken. Cut up vegetables in large chunks.  Put all ingredients in pot and cover with water.  Bring to boil and simmer for at lease one hour.  Debone chicken and strain broth.  Cut up carrots in bite sized pieces. The only things that go back into the pot are the deboned chicken and carrot pieces.

Serve with the noodles or dumplings.

Auntie Dorothy's Kolachkis
  1. 3 cups of flour

  2. 3 sticks of butter

  3. 1/2 cup of sour cream

  4. Filling: canned apricots, poppy seed, or sweet cheese

Cut butter into flour. Add sour cream.  Knead to form a ball.  Refrigerate till it gets firm. Cut 1/4th of dough at a time to roll out.  Cut into 2" squares and drop small teaspoon of filling in middle.  Fold in different shapes: bring corners up, fold into triangle, whatever.  Bake at 350 degrees for 14 minutes.  When cool, sprinkle with powdered sugar.
